This session, led by Tori Merrill of Travelers Insurance and Alex Clark of Hylant Insurance, brings together the three critical perspectives in cyber risk management - the client, the broker, and the underwriter - to demystify the cyber insurance submission process and turn it into a collaborative exercise rather than a friction point.
Led jointly by a cyber broker and a cyber underwriter, the discussion will walk step-by-step through a real-world cyber submission, highlighting:
· What makes a submission strong, credible, and underwriter ready
· Common gaps, red flags, and pitfalls that slow decisions or drive exclusions
· How to clearly identify, document, and communicate controls, incidents, and risk posture
· Best practices for passing information between clients, brokers, and carriers
· How to anticipate, negotiate, and ultimately satisfy underwriting subjectivities
The session will also address the biggest concerns from each seat at the table - what clients worry about disclosing, what brokers need to advocate effectively, and what underwriters must see to confidently deploy capacity. The goal is to align incentives, reduce friction, and create a shared understanding that leads to faster decisions, better coverage, and stronger cyber resilience.
In short: less back-and-forth, fewer surprises, and better outcomes for everyone.
Tori Merrill is an Account Executive at Travelers Insurance on the Private & Nonprofit Management Liability team, with a primary focus on Cyber. Since joining Travelers as an intern after graduating from Butler University’s Risk & Insurance Program in 2018, she has built a career supporting agents and brokers in the Indianapolis market. In addition to her account management responsibilities, Tori also serves as the Cyber Regional Lead for Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky, acting as a liaison between field offices and Travelers’ home office cyber team to support underwriting strategy and market insight.
Alex Clark has been a Vice President & Cyber Solutions Practice Leader at Hylant Insurance since 2022 and prior to that served as a Cyber Risk Advisor with Hylant since 2020. He earned his Cyber Professional Liability Practitioner (CPLP) certification as part of the Professional Liability Underwriting Society in November, 2021.
